Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a condition that becomes apparent in the preschool and early school years. These children experience difficulty controlling their behavior and/or paying attention. It is estimated that 3-5 % of American children have ADHD. According to the most recent edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR), children with ADHD may be consistently inattentive, may have a pattern of hyperactivity, may be unusually impulsive, or they may exhibit all three types of behavior.
At Thoughtful House Center for Children, we find that these children often have underlying health issues, such as allergies. With appropriate medical treatment (often requiring nothing more than an appropriate diet), the symptoms of ADHD generally improve or disappear completely.
