Research FAQ

What is the research mission of Thoughtful House?
Our scientists and physicians are at the cutting edge of a new understanding of the biological origins of childhood developmental disorders. Our offices in Austin, Texas are the hub of an existing collaborative research program - a virtual university - involving more than thirty-five scientists in academic institutions worldwide.

What has caused the controversy surrounding Dr Wakefield?
Dr. Wakefield resisted pressure from elements in the medical establishment, certain government agencies, and the media in the UK to stop his research on the possible links between childhood immunizations, intestinal inflammation, and autism. He left the Royal Free School of Medicine in London in 2001 to continue this research. Despite continued media misrepresentations on his work, he and his research collaborators continue to focus on evidence-based medicine.

Is Dr. Wakefield anti-vaccine? Is Thoughtful House?
No. The researchers and clinicians at Thoughtful House are searching for answers to the biological origins of childhood developmental disorders. One area of research involves determining if there are children with a genetic predisposition that makes them more vulnerable to adverse vaccine reactions. If so, we (medicine and society) need to identify those children and offer them a safer vaccination program (for instance, spacing standard inoculations over time).

In the meantime, it is the belief of Thoughtful House that parents have the right to be informed of the benefits and risks of all vaccinations, in order to make informed healthcare decisions with their child’s doctor.

Who is collaborating with Thoughtful House on the research program?
A partial list includes: Dr. Paul Ashwood (University of California, Davis), Dr. Noam Harpaz (Mount Sinai Hospital, NY), Dr. Jill James (Arkansas Children's Hospital Research Institute), Dr. Jim Mapes (Rules Based Medicine, Austin,TX), Dr. George Mazariegos (Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh), Dr. Elizabeth Mumper (University of Virginia), Dr. Stephen Walker (Wake Forest University Medical Center), Dr. Carol Stott (Cambridge, UK), Dr Scott Montgomery (Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden), and Dr Boyd Haley (Chairman, Chemistry Dept., University of Kentucky).
